Where it all began
I never knew Salvador Dalí. It was his drawings, his letters, his books and his working papers that led me to him. I discovered much more than a famous painter: a curious mind, driven by ideas and by the desire to break down the boundaries between the arts.
Montreal was the natural choice. It is a city that welcomes singular approaches, believes in crossovers and knows how to make room for new cultural ventures. This is where this new adventure begins.

Imagining the museum of tomorrow
I see the MASD as a museum where high standards and generosity go hand in hand. The word “archives” is no detail: it commits us to preserving, documenting, researching and passing on.
Dalí is our way in; Montreal, the place for a living dialogue with creators from here and elsewhere. The MASD is a beginning: an institution in the making, in a building more than 150 years old that is finally opening to the public.

Dalí moves into 357 de la Commune West
The MASD finds a natural home in Montreal: a French-speaking cultural metropolis open to the world, and the Commissioners’ Building, a place of exchange since 1875.
In the 1940s, the Automatistes and the Refus global manifesto championed creative freedom and the role of the unconscious. Their approaches and Dalí’s are distinct, but they share the same urge to shift our point of view.
In Montreal, Dalí becomes the starting point of a dialogue between Europe and North America. A North American gateway for art and culture, Quebec offers a meeting place where Dalí’s work, archives and method open up new possibilities for today’s artists.

To preserve and pass on his works and archives, while bringing audiences, creators and researchers together around innovative exhibitions and experiences that invite us to explore, question and imagine the world differently.
